Attorney Trica Hoffman-Simanek Presents to the Iowa Health Care Association on the topic of Preventing Litigation and What to Do If It Happens

Tricia Hoffman-Simanek goes virtual for her 2020 session at the Iowa Health Care Association 2020 Vision Convention and Trade Show.

Tricia Hoffman-Simanek, Attorney and Senior Vice President at Shuttleworth & Ingersoll, P.L.C., co-presented along with Dr. Michelle Kinneer, risk and patient safety education manager with MMIC Insurance, and Andrea Rogers, director of claims and risk solutions for the Accel Group, at the Iowa Health Care Association 2020 Vision Convention and Trade Show. The presentation focused on costliness of trial verdicts and why preventing litigation should remain one of the goals of health care providers, specifically long-term communities. The session offered best practices and prevention tips to lessen the risk of long term care communities being sued. Practical tips included engaging legal counsel immediately when an unexpected event occurs causing serious injury or death to a resident and having a robust peer review policy/process. Tricia also discussed the current hot issues in long term care litigation. The session also discussed the best way to help your legal team defend the facilities and staff and prepare for a trial. Finally, Tricia discussed the current state of Iowa legislation, including the COVID-19 immunity.The Iowa Health Care Association (IHCA) and its divisions, Iowa Center for Assisted Living (ICAL) and Iowa Center for Home Care (ICHC) represent 800 Iowa organizations that provide long-term care to Iowans through nursing facilities, assisted living, residential care, senior living communities and home health agencies. The 2020 Vision Convention and Trade Show is being hosted digitally, with educational resources being made available with registration through October 31, 2020.
